Whale Sightings from Shore

As Powell River does not offer whale watching tours, most people see whales and creatures of the sea from random sightings on shore. Often people will see whales from a trip on the ferry as well, as they usually announce whale sightings to the patrons on board. The many times I have seen orcas, dolphins, humpback and grey whales in our waters has been either from the viewpoint on Marine Avenue, or from my family property near Saltery Bay. Often you can see the whales just from walking along the sea walk or spending the day at the beach. The resident orcas come through at all times of the year, but the humpbacks arrive early summer every year, and stay until the fall. Often you can see the whales spouting at the surface, breaching, or feeding. Our waters are very calm compared to the open ocean on the west side of Vancouver Island, and so it offers protection for whales and their calves as they migrate to their feeding grounds. It is truly a special moment when you get to see the whales naturally and organically from shore.
